I like to find a theme for my blogs on this site. They are normally about some aspect of what I have seen, but this week’s is slightly different.
At first I thought about writing about what I think of as ‘Blue season’ that period of time when there is a surprising amount of blue to be seen, in the forget-me-nots, the bluebells, the blue tits and the occasional Jay
But when I was looking through the pictures I had taken and how I was cropping them, I realized that for most of them I was choosing a long, thin format. It’s a format I like and often crop too.
It is especially good for birds in flight as it exaggerates the sense of movement with a sense of direction and space for the birds to fly into.
It’s nearly as good for groups of birds on the water or ground particularly where they are almost inn a line.
While I’ve talked about groups of birds flying or on the water, it also works for single birds (or pairs) too, allowing them to be offset and the viewer to get a sense of the context or background of the shot.
Branches of flowers or trees fit the style drawing the eye across the image
Landscapes get shown well in it though with one of lens being repaired I didn’t have what I needed to take any this week.
What I’m saying I suppose - the long and short of it - is that I like shots cropped like this – hopefully you will too, though sometimes they look better bigger so do click on the image or turn your phone sideways.
