This week there was time for a short visit to the RSPB reserve at Otmoor before picking up one of the sons at Didcot.
It was only as we were driving through the village and down the lane to the site did I realise that we had actually been here before – I’m clearly getting (very) old!
It was lovely and sunny, and the sky was a bright “spring-time” blue, but it was winter cold – and I mean C-O-L-D. I was very glad of all the extra layers I had put on and of course had another round in the on-going debate about how much heat you lose through the top of your head.
As ever the really blue sky was not only beautiful in its own right and a fabulous background for many of the flying birds, but its reflection in the water made it even better.
The blue water of the lake contrasted wonderfully with the bright white of a couple of mute swans so despite having lots of pictures of swans I couldn't resist taking a couple more
With regards to birds in flight, the brightness helps to ensure that more of the shots are in focus
And I particularly like this shot as it is so reminiscent of the three flying ducks that were on the sitting room walls in so many sitcoms of the 70s and 80s.
There were lots of gladwall and the colour contrast with the speckled brown of the female’s plumage against the water was lovely.
However, there weren’t that many other ducks but capturing some shots of a fieldfare more than made up for it. I’m not sure I have taken pictures of one before.
Other non-waterfowl included a pheasant, a red kite and a chaffinch
