Alex Horne, the comedian, writer, star and creator of Taskmaster and reluctant birdwatcher described birding as “like a game of hide and seek, where you do the hiding and the seeking, and the birds don’t even know they are playing”
I love this description though it does beg the question: how can they be so good at it even though they aren’t playing?
I’m forever hearing a bird, stopping and staring into what I think is the right tree or bush but more often than not I don’t see anything or just see a flash as the bird flies rapidly away.
I’m glad to say that it's not true of all birds. There are some who thankfully don’t play hide and seek. They are either bigger (like Canada geese)...
...don’t mind being seen or are, like robins, exhibitionists - so you can get really close
It's easy to photograph these birds too and perhaps because it is that much easier and there are more of them, they can get overlooked so here are a few shots to thank them for ‘posing’
An alternative ‘strategy’ on days when the birds are proving elusive is to enjoy and photograph the scenery, especially if I’m there early enough to enjoy the sunrise.
